Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is a small, charming fishing village located on the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) in Mexico, about 60 miles southwest of the US-Mexico border and a 3.5-hour drive from Tucson or Phoenix. It offers modern amenities while still retaining its traditional charm and culture. The region is easily accessible via modern highways from Arizona and Southern California and is located in a "Free Zone", so no visas or car permits are required. The weather is typically warm with clear skies, and the climate is more moderate than Arizona, with slightly cooler summers and slightly warmer winters. Rocky Point was originally a fishing village in the 1930s and eventually became one of the largest shrimp producers in the Sea of Cortez. It was later discovered by Americans as a retirement and vacation destination. The area offers unique ocean conditions with extreme tides of up to 23 feet, creating a unique marine life. Swimming is very safe, with calm water and no rip tides. There are many attractions to visit in Rocky Point, including the Pinacate Mountains, San Jorge Island, the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans, and the Altar Desert sand dunes. Rocky Point has sunny weather almost year-round with little rainfall and offers a variety of sporting activities, such as sailing, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and windsurfing. It also offers a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment options, as well as beautiful beaches, including Playa Arenosa (Sandy Beach), where visitors can enjoy water sports and fishing. The locals are friendly and many speak English, making communication easy. Come visit Rocky Point for a taste of Mexico at its finest.
